Flexible working hours ensures productivity— Jobberman research

A survey on how to ensure productivity in the workplace has shown that 59.8 per cent of millennials in the workplace prefers flexible working hours.
The millennials, which comprise people born between 1980s and the early 2000s, indicated that flexible working hours boosted their work performance.
Conducted by online job recruiting company, Jobberman Ghana, the findings from the survery, therefore, suggested that employers developed flexible work schedule where employees are not restricted to the conventional working hours and are free to choose the best suitable times.
That, the report added, enables employees attain a balanced work-life to ensure better quality of life and mental and physical wellness to reduce absenteeism. 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jobberman Ghana, Mr Geoffrey France, who presented the research findings to Human Resource (HR) professionals from various institutions on January 30 in Accra  said, “According to our findings, 59.8 per cent of respondents say flexible working hours motivate them the most to accomplish their tasks at work.”
The theme for the launch was “Millennials and the digital marketplace.”

The need for recreation
The report highlighted the need to create an enabling environment that allowed millennial employees to boost their work performance.
According to the report, theoretically, group recreational activities are a productivity booster. However, engaging in regular fun activities and taking regular breaks from work are very important.
The report further stated that the health and wellness status of millennial employees as well as the availability of health facilities were essential to increase productivity at work.
About 18.6 per cent of millennial employees opted for the availability of health and wellness facilities as a key motivator for executing tasks in the workplace.
“The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists increased productivity, improved staff morale, reduced stress, reduced staff turnover and reduced absenteeism among benefits of workforce promotions,” the report stated.

Commitment to company’s values and goals
The report also shows that millennials relate and are committed to the mission and purpose of their organisation.
45.1 per cent of the respondents who took part in the survey conducted by Jobberman Ghana said a company’s mission and values are most important to them (employees).

Collaboration over competition
 The research findings also revealed that millennials prefer to team up and pursue projects to improve performance and productivity.
The report recorded 54.1 per cent of respondents in favour of collaborations, as against 12.7 per cent in the competition group.
According to the report, collaborations enable millennials to learn from one another to share new ideas and collectively solve problems.
In view of this, the report showed that 26.6 per cent of millennials enjoyed learning and working with colleagues to achieve results. Though training is important, it was observed that employees gravitate more towards an experimentational environment.

Efficient feedback system
The Jobberman research findings also stated that there was a need for the development for an efficient timely and transparent feedback system.
It added that a healthy open door policy, which could that the form of group and individual feedbacks through surveys and suggestion box, allows employees to contribute towards the achievement of a company’s goals and objectives.
Respondents representing 38.5 per cent, opined that essentially, employees prefer to receive feedback from their employers weekly.

The use of technology
The report stated that millennials are the most Internet-savvy generation and as per the research findings, the use of up-to-date software and technology facilitates productivity at work.
“97.2 per cent of the respondents answered yes to whether up- to-date software is important for their productivity,” the report stated.
