KNUST flogs GTUC in first TBSC contest

 Representatives of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) yesterday flogged their counterparts from the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC), when the two sides met in the opening contest of the Graphic Business Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC) at the British Council Hall in Accra on Monday.
At the end of the contest, KNUST emerged winners with 53 points and qualified to the next round of the competition while GTUC was booted out of the competition after managing only 17 points.

The TBSC, which is one of the off-page experiences created by the Graphic Communications Group (GCGL) to ensure that the GRAPHIC BUSINESS newspaper fully engages with its audiences, had drawn business students from 12 tertiary institutions across the country to compete for the ultimate prize.
Held on the theme: “Developing Business Minds -The Hot Sea,t” the contest which lasted for two hours saw the students answering questions from the various segments of business, including the economy, entrepreneurship, finance as well as questions from the GRAPHIC BUSINESS newspaper.
KNUST was represented by Mr Baah Acheamfour, Mr Van-Yawson Gideon and Ms Henrietta Bobi, while GTUC was represented by Mr Shaibu Mashud, Mr Enoch Oppong Gyansah and Mr Paul Asiama.

Turn of events
With GTUC scoring only a point at the end of the first round and KNUST garnering 15 points, some supporters of GTUC, halfway through the contest were seen visibly disappointed at their mates.
The contest, however, became more challenging when GTUC won the “problem of the day” question in the third round of the contest, scoring seven out of 10 while KNUST scored six out of 10.  
Speaking to the GRAPHIC BUSINESS after the contest, Mr Shaibu Mashud said: “I think it’s a good initiative. Now that we have seen the structure of the questions, I believe that we would be better prepared in the future.”
“I trust that as we progress, engineering and law students will be able to learn from the business students competing,” he said.
The Research Manager at the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Mr Alhassan Yusif Trawule, who was the moderator of the contest, told the paper in an interview after the contest that although it was an academic competition and must be done in the spirit of friendliness, it still remained competitive.
Mr Trawule said he was optimistic that the competition would be welcomed by the business students because they had always looked forward to such competitions.
“The excitement will increase as the competition progresses,” he said. 

The Ministry of Business Development and eight other corporate institutions are sponsoring the TBSC.
The huge corporate support for the TBSC will ensure a smooth competition which is expected to run for 13 weeks on TV3.
The sponsors include Accra Brewery Ltd (ABL), BIC and the British Council. The rest are Passion Air, GLICO, EverPure Mineral Water, Fidelity Bank and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG).
YFM and Media General, operators of TV3, are the media partners for the competition.
